Transport policy

- Running to Stand Still: Analysis of the Government's 2000 Ten-Year Transport Plan published by CPRE. Raises questions about the current direction of transport policy and sets out the case for a change in approach.
- Traffic Reduction: a last opportunity?: Friends of the Earth report outlining promises that Labour made to cut traffic levels. Puts the case for real cuts in road traffic and a national traffic reduction target.
- Sustainable Road Transport - key government policies: a useful document listing key bits of government road policy
- Road Block briefing on appraisal of local road schemes: What is appraisal? How can I make them look at alternatives? Where can I find the right info? How can I use it?
- Strategic Environmental Assessments for Local Transport Plans: briefing for Transport 2000 on Strategic Environmental Assessments of Local Transport Plans
- Road Pricing: Joint position statement from Friends of the Earth, Transport 2000, CPRE, Living Streets, Carplus on road pricing
- Beyond Transport Infrastructure: Important new research from CPRE and the government's Countryside Agency examining the impacts of three big recently built road schemes, including the Newbury Bypass. The report shows how the roads caused significant traffic growth, much more than was predicted at the time, and how the roads are clogged again, and how the roads have led to pressure for more development on previously undeveloped land. Essential reading for all roads campaigners.

over the Horizon: The report that the DfT want to keep hidden... The
DfT commissioned this report in 2006 to show how a 60% cut in transport
CO2 emissions could be achieved. The report shows that technology (cleaner
car engines, biofuels etc) will not be enough and that we must reduce
traffic growth.

"So what's your alternative then..."
Some inspiration:
- Transport 2000's Good Practice briefings: Examples of good transport practice showing the many ways in which companies, local authorities, schools, tourist attractions and others are addressing the need to reduce car use.
- Paying for Better Transport: Costing the 'Way to Go'Manifesto: Report looking at the cost of delivering the measures identified in the Way to Go manifesto based on current best practice both from Britain and the rest of Europe. Identifies the benefits this would deliver; possible sources of funding and which groups in society would benefit the most from implementing these policies.
- The walking bus: Everything about setting up a walking bus for junior school children.
- Sustrans: Sustrans is a charity that works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport. See their website for info on Safer Routes to School and Travel Smart.
- Less Travel Where People Live: Lynn Sloman's authorative report on how local schemes such as school travel plans, workplace travel plans, etc., could cut urban traffic from between 15% and 33%.
- Smarter Choices: A report published by the DfT from ESCR Transport Studies Unit at University College London.UCL with 6 specialists including Phil Goodwin and Lynn Sloman. This shows that "soft measures" can reduce congestion by 21% at peak times and that every pound spent on well designed soft measures could bring £10 in benefit in terms of reduced congestion. This has a very clear summary report and then goes into much more detail in the main report.
