Landscapes Under Threat - A628/A57 Mottram-Tintwistle Bypass

The picture shows the popular Mottram Horse Fair as seen from Mottram Church Yard in 2004. The fair is in full swing with a play area and bouncy castle on the left of the picture, horse boxes in front of the listed Mottram Old Hall at the centre of the picture, and car parking seen through the trees on the right. The Fair has been in existence for more than a hundred years and has nowhere else to go.
The dual carriageway of the new Mottram Tintwistle bypass on the A628/A57 in Longdendale would cut straight across the middle of the picture from west to east: from the play area on the left to the woodland on the right. The trees above the blue horse box would be felled to make way for a large roundabout where two new roads would continue (off picture). One road would continue east through the trees and countryside until it entered the Peak District National Park. A second new road would sweep south downhill below the blue horse box and through the car parking area to meet the A57. Traffic flows on the new road in front of the hall would reach nearly 50,000 vehicles per day by 2022.
